Not financial advice: I’m not a financial advisor, just a mom of teens sharing what’s worked for our family. I only open Credit cards if I can pay them off by paying the balance in full every month.

My Hotel Credits, Explained
A hotel credit is use-it-or-lose-it money that comes with many travel credit cards. For instance, a card may have $300 a year toward hotel bookings, usually only through its own travel portal, often only on stays of two nights or more.
I wouldn’t consider this “free” because I have already paid the annual fee. My goal is to use these meaningfully to recoup the fees and cover travel I had already planned.
I currently carry four cards with Hotel Credits.
- Amex Platinum: $300 every six months, on prepaid bookings through Amex Travel for Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection for 2 nights.
-
- Starting January 1st, 2027, all Amex bookings must be 2 nights to qualify for the credit.)
- To receive the credit, you must pay in full in advance, and the Amex credit will show up in your account.

- Citi Strata Elite: $300 a year, on stays of two or more nights booked through Citi Travel.
- This credit shows up automatically at the time of booking.
- Bilt Palladium: $200 every six months, on stays of two or more nights booked through Bilt Travel.
- The Bilt credit is interesting because you can combine the $200 with $100 of Bilt cash. This opens up options for better hotels and/or longer stays covered with the credit.
- World of Hyatt card: With this card, I receive a free night certificate every year, good for one night at any Category 1-4 hotel. Plus, I can earn extra certificates along the way, like the Brand Explorer one for staying at five different Hyatt brands or for achieving status.
Disclosure: these cards are not cheap. The annual fees run $895, $595, $495, and $95, so about $2,080 a year across the four. The credits are money I’ve already paid for, and my goal is to use them for something already planned and recoup some or all of the fees.
2026 Hotel Credits

Hyatt Free Night Certificates: Charlotte Concerts, Back to Back
Fall is concert season, and I found myself with a perfect use for hotel credits. Both Olivia Rodrigo and Phoebe Bridgers had shows in Charlotte in the same week. Spectrum Center is far enough away that driving home doesn’t make sense, and a Hyatt Place is within spitting distance. I had 2 Hyatt Cat 1-4 free night certificates that would expire in a few months.
This hotel was perfect because it had rooms with 2 queens and free breakfast. Parking cost about $40 per night, but it was worth it to avoid dealing with parking after the show let out.
A single night is hard to book with hotel credits because most of them require at least a two-night stay, including Citi, Bilt, and Amex The Hotel Collection. Amex is also moving Fine Hotels + Resorts from a one-night to a two-night stay starting in 2027.
On a sold-out concert night, the hotel was running about $250 per night.
If you don’t have free night certificates yet but want a nice, convenient hotel for a show at the Spectrum Center, you can use my {Affiliate Link} for The Hyatt Place Charlotte Downtown.
Bilt & Citi: A Quick Trip to New Orleans
For our last trip of the year, we are taking a quick weekend trip to New Orleans, which means two rooms for three nights.
We haven’t stayed at a Drury Hotel before, but the reviews are good, and I’m excited to check out the breakfast and the evening snack. We covered 3 nights for one room with the Bilt Credit, plus $100 in Bilt cash and $207 out of pocket. The other room was covered with the $300 Citi credit plus a $75 off offer with only $83 out of pocket. Only $290 out of pocket for 3 nights and 2 rooms with breakfast for all 5 of us and evening snacks feels like a great way to use these. Plus, our flights were covered by Virgin Airlines points, with about $5 per person each way to book Delta flights.
Amex: Planning for the Spring Trip
I am working on our Spring trip to Germany and Belgium for all 5 of us. I booked two nights at The Hoxton in Brussels. Through the Amex Hotel Collection, we also get a $100 food credit to cover breakfast with only $97 out of pocket.
What I’ll Do on January 1
On January 1, three credits refresh at the same moment: a new Amex $300 for the first half of 2027, a new Citi $300 for the year, and a new Bilt $200 for the first half.
For the Amex Credit, I’ll book the second room in Brussels.
I’ll allocate the first Bilt credit and the Citi credit to hotels in Scotland for the summer. I’ll get another round of Amex and Bilt credits in July, and I’m sure I’ll have a way to use those.

Check Your Own Credits
If you carry cards with hotel credits, double-check you’ve used them before the year ends. And it never hurts to plan for the next hotel credit drop. I’ll get started first thing on January 1st to book the second Brussels room with the Amex credit, and the summer Scotland hotels will be covered with the Bilt and Citi credits
I still lost one this year. My first-half Bilt credit went unused when a summer trip was canceled. The money and Bilt cash came back but the credit did not.
